How Much is the Entire Mortal Kombat Franchise Worth?

Even if you're not really interested in video games, there's a very good chance that you've at least heard of Mortal Kombat. This is much more than just a video game these days, and it is truly a franchise that has seen a great deal of success. The original video game was released in 1992 by a company called Midway Games. Eventually, that company went bankrupt, even though Mortal Kombat was highly successful. The company was eventually purchased by Warner Brothers, who ultimately decided to do a complete reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

As such, the company released a number of additional video games based on the franchise. These video games were released for several different gaming platforms, making it easier to get a hold of the game and enjoy it, regardless of the type of system that someone had access to. Being the entertainment guru that it is, Warner Brothers didn't stop there, either.. As a matter of fact, they have since created a number of films, animated television series, and even comic books based on the Mortal Kombat franchise. They also created and sold a number of live action figures that reflect the most popular characters in the game.

Warner Brothers really put their backs into revitalizing the franchise a few years ago. Even though the company had been criticized to a certain degree about the violence in the game, they made every effort to create renewed interest in the game. They also continued on with the game as it was, violence and all. History buffs will appreciate the fact that their refusal to remove some of the violence from the game ultimately led to the new rating system that all games are currently based off of.

Just how much is this franchise currently worth? Several years ago it was estimated to be worth a little more than five billion dollars. However, that amount has grown exponentially in the last five or six years. Today, the entire franchise is easily worth at least $12 billion. That's a remarkable amount of money, especially when you consider the fact that the initial video game almost wasn't produced at all. As a matter of fact, the original idea for the game never came to fruition and what would eventually become Mortal Kombat was thought of as more of an adaptation of a failed idea than anything else until it hit the store shelves. It was then that the developers realized that they had a true gold mine on their hands. Up until then, they had been more disappointed in the development of this project than anything else.

One of the reasons that the game is so popular is specifically because it has a lot of graphics and they do make it feel quite realistic. It's also challenging. Anyone that's played it knows that it takes a lot of practice in order to make it all the way through the game. The fact that so many additional games have been created to support the original also means that gamers have a wide variety of choices available to them. It also helps that they have a certain amount of control when it comes to creating characters. People have a tendency to be more interested in playing a game when they can exercise control over these types of things as opposed to being handed a game with more rigid characters and then being told exactly what they are supposed to do with them.

There's no telling how much further the franchise can go. As of right now, it has experienced a dramatic resurgence and its popularity and it seems to be doing even better than many of the other franchises out there. Obviously, Warner Brothers understands what sells and what doesn't. They've been using Mortal Kombat as a cash cow for several years now and there's really no reason to expect them to change that format any time soon. As long as the franchise continues to make money, there will be new games and other pieces of merchandise that are issued. This is something that makes gamers happy, because the Mortal Kombat saga is far from over. If it keeps going at the rate that it has been, there's virtually no limit to the amount of money that could potentially be made in the coming years.
